This is the first comprehensive guide to the high-end PowerShot cameras, filled with step by step instructions in using the camera, and plenty of photography tips that will help you improve your skills. My Canon PowerShot G11 is not your typical point and shoot camera. Many buyers of this model already have considerable experience in photography. In my case, I own and use a Canon EOS Rebel XSi, but wanted a pocket sized camera as a walk-about model when I didn’t want to carry my D-SLR. The Canon G11 was perfect for me, and this book is perfect for me, too. It starts out very simply and with easy to understand language for absolute newbies, such as those graduating from a lesser point and shoot camera. Then, it explores the more advanced features of the camera, explaining every control, dial, and button, and each menu item and options. It not only tells you how to use each feature, but why you might want to make a particular setting, as well.

The other guides I’ve seen are not as good, and basically just rephrase what you find in the user manual Canon packs in the box. This book is a great improvement. The later chapters of the book explain all the photographic concepts you might want to know more about, such as histograms, the effects of various zoom settings, and use of electronic flash, all related specifically to the G10 and G11. The two cameras have slightly different capabilities and menus, and this book does well at pointing them out, and explaining the features of each individually.

I’d given up hope of ever finding a guidebook for a camera of this class that is as good as the author’s Rebel XSi book (which I also have), and am delighted to find this one available. I recommend it highly.

If I had bought Busch's book first I would not have looked for another book. I checked out a few other books at Barnes and Noble as well, but they were only "just a better offering" than Canon's manual and added nothing other than to clear up the ambiguity of the manufacture's manual. It’s great that there are so many books to choose from for the G11. You probably won’t see that for any other compact. I have Jeff Carlson’s book as well as David Busch’s. I was reluctant to buy this book at first because I generally try to purchase guides that are specific to the model I own just to cut down on confusion. Don't let that stop you from buying this book! There is much in common between the G10 and G11 and the author does a great job of clearly pointing out the differences where they do exist. <br/><br/>The thing that I most like about this book is that not only does it tell you the function of every button and menu setting on your camera but it goes on to tell you why you may or may not want to use a particular setting in various shooting situations. The author is not dogmatic. He states his opinions but leaves you to draw your own conclusions. <br/><br/>I also really like the way the book is structured. The early chapters get you up to speed quickly so you can get out and take some pictures, which is why you bought this camera in the first place. When you start using the camera you will undoubtedly have more questions about some of the more advanced options on these very flexible cameras. The middle chapters go on to explain the functionality of the camera features in greater detail. The later chapters cover more general photography subjects like exposure, depth of field, flash use, etc., but geared toward these cameras specifically. There is also a pretty good run down of the accessories available as well as the included software apps. <br/><br/>It is a larger book than the guides intended to throw in your camera bag but the extra size and weight are put to good use. If I could only own one book on my G11 this one would be it. I have a Canon G11 and have a couple other books on the camera. I was reluctant to buy this book at first because I generally try to purchase guides that are specific to the model I own just to cut down on confusion. Don’t let that stop you from buying this book! There is much in common between the G10 and G11 and the author does a great job of clearly pointing out the differences where they do exist.

The thing that I most like about this book is that not only does it tell you the function of every button and menu setting on your camera but it goes on to tell you why you may or may not want to use a particular setting in various shooting situations. The author is not dogmatic. He states his opinions but leaves you to draw your own conclusions.

I also really like the way the book is structured. The early chapters get you up to speed quickly so you can get out and take some pictures, which is why you bought this camera in the first place. When you start using the camera you will undoubtedly have more questions about some of the more advanced options on these very flexible cameras. The middle chapters go on to explain the functionality of the camera features in greater detail. The later chapters cover more general photography subjects like exposure, depth of field, flash use, etc., but geared toward these cameras specifically. There is also a pretty good run down of the accessories available as well as the included software apps.

It is a larger book than the guides intended to throw in your camera bag but the extra size and weight are put to good use. If I could only own one book on my G11 this one would be it. I highly recommend it!
